Bahrain’s Acquittal of Khalil Marzooq

Press Statement

Marie Harf
Deputy Department Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson

Washington, DC

June 25, 2014

The United States welcomes the High Criminal Court’s decision to acquit Wifaq leader Khalil Marzooq of charges related to incitement and advocating terrorism. We believe that today’s verdict is an important step towards fostering a spirit of consensus building and compromise, necessary conditions for the success of the dialogue and reconciliation process.

We urge all parties in Bahrain to renounce violence and redouble their efforts to reach an agreement that will lead to full participation in upcoming elections and the formation of an inclusive government.
