The State Department’s Sports Envoy program will pair Paralympic gold medalist and reigning Chicago marathon champion Josh George with Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix for a week-long series of clinics and engagements in Rio de Janeiro from November 4-8. This initiative, the first to pair an Olympian and Paralympian together as envoys, is designed to advance the status of underserved youth and to promote the progress made under the Americans with Disabilities Act, as the United States commemorates the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Act. The program highlights the way sports promotes respect for diversity and full inclusion of all citizens in society.

In cooperation with USA Track & Field and U.S. Paralympics, the State Department will send George and Felix to Rio de Janeiro for a series of workshops focused on disability inclusion and access to sports in underserved communities. The weeklong schedule will connect the American sports stars with Brazilian youth through clinics, leadership and team-building activities, and a track and field day featuring Paralympic and Olympic events.

The program continues the State Department’s recent, robust schedule of sports diplomacy programming that fosters people-to-people ties with an important regional partner, while capitalizing on Brazil’s role as the host of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

Since 2003, the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has brought nearly 1,000 athletes from more than 60 countries to the United States to participate in Sports Visitor programs while sending over 220 U.S. athletes to more than 50 countries on Sports Envoy programs.
