Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard will travel to Berlin, Germany, October 27-29, to attend an international conference on the Syrian refugee crisis, hosted by the Government of Germany. Assistant Secretary Richard will join more than 40 foreign affairs ministers and representatives of international organizations to explore ways to increase coordination among donor countries and humanitarian organizations, as well as support refugee-hosting countries in the region.

More than half of Syria’s population has been forced to flee their homes. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 3 million people have sought refuge in Syria’s immediate neighbors Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Nearly 6.5 million civilians have been displaced within Syria, and nearly 11 million Syrians are in need of aid within the country.

Since the start of the conflict, the United States has provided more than $2.9 billion in humanitarian assistance inside Syria and throughout the region, through UN organizations and non-governmental organizations.
