Press Statement

John Kerry
Secretary of State

Washington, DC

August 26, 2014

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Moldova as you celebrate the 23rd anniversary of your independence on August 27.

When I traveled to Moldova just several months ago, I spoke with Prime Minister Leanca about Moldova’s commitment to promoting democracy and our commitment to seeing your country achieve its full democratic potential, including through U.S. assistance to improve Moldova’s judicial environment. I also visited the limestone cellars of Cricova where one of your proudest exports has made Moldova famous around the world. I could sense the excitement the Moldovan people have for the future. As I said then, you are defining the future through your own hopes and your own aspirations.

I applaud the Moldovan people’s commitment to European integration. Many new opportunities are opening up thanks to visa liberalization and the recent ratification of the Association Agreement with the EU. The United States will continue to help you take full advantage of those opportunities.

The United States remains committed to Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. And we will continue to play an active role in the negotiations to resolve the Transnistria conflict.

As you celebrate your 23-year journey since independence, the United States looks forward to helping your country build a more secure and prosperous future.
