International Journalists Arrive on Edward R. Murrow Exchange Program to Explore U.S. Democracy and Media Best Practices
Media Note
From October 27-November 14, more than 90 international journalists from 80 countries will participate in the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists, during which they will examine the rights and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy and observe operational practices, standards and institutions of the media. They will also explore U.S. efforts to encourage a free and responsible press as an essential element of any democratic state, a core element of U.S. foreign policy.
On October 29, the journalists will hear from U.S. officials regarding current foreign policies. State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki will also take questions from the foreign journalists.
Throughout their time in the nation’s capital, the group will meet with leading independent U.S. journalists and authors, including noted Washington Post journalist and author Bob Woodward.
Following Washington, D.C., the group will divide into regional groups to work with one of the following U.S. schools and centers of journalism:
Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication, Arizona State University
S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications & Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University
Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Georgia
School of Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Minnesota
School of Journalism & Mass Communication, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Gaylord College of Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Oklahoma
The Poynter Institute
Smaller groups will then travel to Tucson, Dallas, Pensacola, Albuquerque, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Diego. All participants will reconvene in New York City, where they will visit major media outlets and be part of discussions on the essential role of independent media in fostering and protecting freedom of expression and democracy.
Participants are selected by the staff at U.S. Embassies around the world.
