Hundreds of citizen diplomats will arrive in Washington, D.C., this week for the Global Ties U.S. National Meeting, the first of many events and outreach efforts throughout 2015 to mark the 75th anniversary of State Department international exchange programs.

The national meeting with the theme “New Diplomacy: Building on 75 Years” will run from February 4-7 for those who implement the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and other State Department exchange programs. Plenary session speakers include Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States; Richard Stengel, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs; Evan Ryan, Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs; and Oscar Arias, State Department exchange alumnus, Nobel Prize Laureate, and former President of Costa Rica.

The State Department is also kicking off the 75th anniversary with a new website, exchanges.state.gov/75th, an #ExchangesAre campaign, and several new videos that explore the history of State Department exchange programs, as well as the impacts of people-to-people diplomacy around the world.

The February 5 plenary sessions for the national meeting are open to the press with advance notice. Please contact the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at eca-press@state.gov.
