Washington, DC

February 23, 2015

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) and Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP) will host Chinese activist Zhou Dan for a screening of the documentary The Blood of Yingzhou District at 12:00 p.m. on February 25, 2015, in Room 1105 of the Harry S Truman Building. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Scott Busby will provide welcome remarks. Mr. Zhou will provide remarks following the film screening and respond to questions.

Mr. Zhou is an openly gay lawyer in China specializing in serving the LGBT community. In 2003, he started the Shanghai Hotline for Sexual Minorities. He continues to give free legal advice in China on a near-daily basis.

The 40-minute long The Blood of Yingzhou District—the 2007 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Short Subject—portrays a year in the life of children in China’s Anhui province who have lost their parents to AIDS. The documentary tells the story of traditional Chinese obligations of family and village colliding with terror of infection, and how these forces play out in the lives of children in remote villages.

The remarks will be open to the press.

Media representatives must RSVP and receive confirmation to attend. They should present one of the following: (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver’s license, passport).
